What an excellent song. Around 3:19 he gets a little Adam Sandler on it. Feel me? But man, he is in it. By the time he gets to 4:23 I think the place is gonna blow!

Lyrics

Darlin’
My frustration
It gets me, it gets me where it hurts me most.
Like five rapid to the gut it’s not so easy to see.
And I’ve been gone far, far to long
To expect you not to change even a little bit
And I guess I hope I’m still the kind of guy
Your needin for your fool.

Cuz life’s a bowl here on the road and these four wheels
Oh but something about the whole thing
It doesn’t feel real

Work my days for you
Cuz I love you girl, I don’t want you
I need you
And I can’t see no other way

Darlin’
I work my days for you
Cuz I love you girl, I don’t want you
I need you
And I can’t see no other way

Ohhhhh this separation
It really gets you thinkin
And all those used up clichés
Well they’ve worn off in the wind
And I, I wonder if your half as innocent as you assure me
Or if you thank him for his time and just never call again

Oh oh
And after all the lights and shows and long hope lanes
It’d be you and me again
But until then

I work my days for you
Cuz I love you girl, I don’t want you
I need you
I can’t see no other way

Oh darlin’
I work my days for you
Cuz I love you girl, I don’t want you
I need you
And I can’t see no other way

Oohh live
I’m home
So love me
And I’m home babe
Oh so touch me

Yeah
I’m home
So kiss me, like you do
Kiss me babe
Babyy
But I’ll do it for you

Ohh babe, yeaahhh babyyy
I want you babe
I’m, I’m home babe
So take me in your arms
Oh babe, baby
Love me like you do
Oh kiss me like you do
And baby you bet I’ll do it for you
Ohh nooo
Hold me like you do

There is a sound your computer makes several times an hour
It drives me mad don’t you know
Doesn’t it mean you need to fix something?
It goes dunk dunk dunk

There is a man across the street, he stares and smokes all day
He drives me mad don’t you know
Why is he always looking at me? Maybe he knows who stole my bike?
They stole my bike

There is a man down the street who lives in his abandoned home
He drives me mad don’t you know
How can they call it an abandoned home if they knock on the door and someone’s there?
They go knock knock knock and someone’s there

Beautiful lyrics:

But I am a good dog runnin’ halfway home
Hear the lonely promenade
Come to nurse the tender terrways

All hands on a grain of sand;
Half smallest things are the high demand.
I can only serenade
And wait my turn to burn or fade.

All colours you can see
Cover the borders of a masterpiece
Time can paint the best of me
Over the unclear eyes of memory

Cover love from sympathy
Be my maker, set me free
Truer hearts could not contain
How I cover love but I have not changed

If I had the past undone
Then I would give my heart to everyone
Hounds are turning, doves have flown
But I am a good dog running halfway home

Lately I’ve been listening to Amelia Curran’s album, Hunter Hunter, as I drive around San Francisco. Her poetry is thick on the album, and I need to listen over and over to untangle what it all mean to me. By which I mean to say that I really enjoy it.

Something from her wikipedia page:

Curran’s lyrics have been described as “evocative” by Spinner Canada who, referring to Curran’s song “The Mistress”, wrote that “Like the best poets, Curran packs so much meaning into each line that the listener barely has time to register each clever lyric before the next zinger comes along.”

Featured on the American Songwriter Magazine website this week. The music is throw-back, but the lyrics are new. I especially like that chorus:

Rock of Ages, cleave for me
Let me hide myself in thee
Buried in the sand
Five hundred miles from Birmingham

+1 points for using “cleave”. Great word. Rhyming “sand” with “Birmingham” is a stretch. I like things that are a stretch.

Lyrics

“Birmingham”

Delta mama and a Nickajack man
Raised their Cumberland daughter in a Tennessee band
Played Springwater, Station Inn
Couldn’t play fast, couldn’t fit in

Caught a ’66 Dodge in Caroline
Got her education on her mama’s dime
She was singing in a bar called Comatose
Halfway rusted on the salty coast

Rock of Ages, cleave for me
Let me hide myself in thee
Buried in the sand
Five hundred miles from Birmingham

Rockabout cowboy in a rock and roll band
Plugged his amplifier in all across the land
Athens, Georgia on a Friday night
Saw that little girl, she could sing alright

Spent five years going from town to town
Waiting on that little girl to come around
Caught in the arms of New York City
To lose that gal seemed terrible pity

Rock of Ages, cleave for me
Let my heart forget a beat
Why do you demand
Calling me from Birmingham

Pulled her covered wagon off the BQE
Said this’ll be the last you’ll ever see of me
Well the cowboy laughed said I know it’s not true
Cause there’s nothing I could do to get loose from you

Made a little money playing in the bars
With two beat up drums and two old guitars
From the Crescent City to the Great Salt Lake
It ain’t what you got, it’s what you make

When the road got rough and the wheels all broke
Couldn’t take more then we could tow
Making something out of nothing with a scratcher and our hope
With two old guitars like a shovel and a rope

Rock of Ages, cleave for me
Let me hide myself in thee
Now I understand
